Greece and the Wildflowers

Before we left Greece a couple of weeks ago, the wildflowers were astounding. I guess most people don't associate Greece with fields of brightly coloured flowers and vibrant green grass, but our area is full of both at this time of the year. I managed to join in with a walk through the hills up behind Koroni, and got a few photos, but I just couldn't capture the swathes of wildflowers in amongst the olive groves, little windy paths and goats. There were clumps of brilliant red anenome-like flowers which were totally new to me in this environment, fields of yellow and white as well and even wild lavender.

Then along the way to get the ferry from Patras to Ancona in Italy, we drove partway along the Old National Highway, and once again came across beautiful fields of pink and yellow flowers amongst the olive groves.

I've run out of words, and hope the pictures tell the story!

When we were living in France, I'd taken photos of this little building in each of the four seasons, with the idea of some paintings.  Now we're back in France for a week, and I recently completed this painting and was amazed to drive past yesterday and see the little building looking almost identical, with the flowering almond and vines in the same stages as last year when I took the photo.  The French term mazet roughly translates as a small agricultural workers' outbuilding. They are scattered all around the Languedoc in the midst of the vines.

Italian Reflections, Positano

This painting is from one of many many photos I took last year in Positano on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. I found it a really difficult place to photograph, mostly due to its layout, and only being able to see one side or the other at a time! Even when we ventured out in a boat, to capture the town sitting nestled at the base of the mountains, was still a challenge. Another thing that made it difficult was the constant haze of smoke from the surrounding hills. It seemed that the local farmers were burning vegetation (possibly vine clippings!) on the stepped terraces up above the town. So I decided to concentrate on 'the small things'and was rewarded with lots of photos of what helps make up beautiful Positano. Thats not to say, though, that I won't be attempting to paint larger parts of Positano at some stage!

Monastery Vlacherna, Corfu

Anyone who has visited Corfu has more than likely found their way to this lovely little monastery. Photos of it seem to depict Corfu, even though the Monastery itself is in an unassuming area near the airport. It sits dutifully in the brilliant blue waters (sometimes turqoise/sometimes ultramarine) and is home to a small number of nuns who maintain the small shop which helps fund the Monastery. Oh, and the little island behind it on the left, is called Mouse Island!

I remember precisely when I took this photo. I was driving along the roads between Frayssinet le Gelat and Gourdon and saw this magnificent field of poppies. For some reason I was unable to stop to take photos - most unusual for me, but I promised myself to return the following day.  I did, and was just in time to get photos of what was left of the field - the tractors had been in and the haybales had appeared. If I'd been a couple of hours later, the poppies would have disappeareared altogether. This became a somewhat frequent occurrence, and a lesson learned!
