My first painting featuring swaying palm trees. There's something about the leaning trunks and haphazard fronds that made it a pleasure to paint.  These palms were at Mission Beach, Queensland, where we spent the night on our way from Port Douglas to Townsville. Its a lovely drive through lush tropical areas of sugar cane with a sense of umm, I think perhaps....timelessness!  Unfortunately, Mission Beach was hit hard in last year's Cyclone Yasi, but seems to be recovering slowly. It has a lovely unspoilt feel to it, and although it was getting a bit late in the season, we managed a wonderful 'real' Aussie hamburger for dinner, complete with beetroot (much to Peter's dismay!)

Kolios Beach is a lovely spot just near where I spend my time on the beautiful Greek island of Skiathos. There's been many a time when I've sat at this table, or one nearby, sipping an ouzo, or perhaps having an evening snack. Sadly, the taverna there didn't seem to be operating this year, but I guess there's always hope for next year.

As mentioned in my email, I think there is something rather appealing about people's abandoned beach umbrellas sitting on the sand whilst they're in the water, or perhaps, trudging up and down the beach. I took this photo of ours while we were swimming down at our local Meme Beach during the summer. This was our second umbrella this year!

I’ve started the year with another beach painting – the photo was taken in the summer in a little Greek town called Stoupa, in the Peloponnese. Painting something like this helps me get through the cold weather we’re having in France right now, though we're on the Mediterranean coast, so are not getting the snow like most of France, which is, as far as I’m concerned is a bit of a pity really!
