Art Weekly No 131 - Italian Lemons
For Sale - 15th October 2013
Italian Lemons
Size: 21 x 15cm
(Postage and handling included)
I guess Italian lemons do look like any other lemons! I seem to have rather a collection of photos of them, and these are mostly taken around the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre areas of Italy. Many of the shops have beautiful displays outside, just waiting for a quick photo to be snapped, and many of the restaurants have a simple heaped bowl of lemons sitting on a table before the restaurant is barely open in the morning. Then of course, speaking of lemons, there's also the wonderful Lemoncello, an Italian lemon liqueur. This particular photo, was taken in Manarola, Cinque Terre on our visit there last year.

A Painting A Week No 115 - Idle Boats, Vernazza
For Sale - 13th November 2012
Idle Boats, Vernazza
Size: 21 x 15cm
Price A$90

Now that we're back in Koroni, I have many many more photos to reference for my paintings. Its been an incredibly busy year of travelling, and it's likely I'm going to have to spend all winter organising all these photos, not to mention previous years. This one though, was taken during a spring visit to Vernazza in Italy's lovely Cinque Terre. Some of the boats that are usually moored in a nice orderly line in the harbour were lying up on the higher level amongst the restaurants, I would suspect, following a nice winter paint job.
When I was actually painting this I was thinking it was Portofino as I have taken similar photos there, but then as I was working on 'ageing' the buildings, I realised it couldn't possibly be Portfofino; the buildings in the background were far too 'tatty' (just as I like them!)
We were in Vernazza again about a month ago with James, and I'm pleased to report it seems to have almost recovered from the devastating mudslide there last autumn. The harbour area is back to normal, though the main street through the town is still pretty chaotic and noisy, with workmen, jackhammers and the like. Most of the shops do seem to have reopened and are sporting new and interesting facades.

Post No6 - 2002 Trip - Back to the Ligurian Coast
We also walked the gentle path alongside the sea between Riomaggiore and Manorola, then made our way to Vernazza, leaving the Australians to check out the other two villages.
One sad thing this time though, was my favourite village of Vernazza. I hadn't realised just how much damage this lovely village had suffered in a huge landslide the previous October. There was work going on furiously everywhere, and it did look as though every effort was being made to get it back into shape as soon as possible. I'm sure the tourist dollars helped too.
Despite the devastation, at the other end of the village, it was business as usual at the port, despite many flooded buildings and the sound of jackhammers......
and time to relax a bit after all the walking....
At the risk of making this blog far too long, I can't possibly leave out Portofino. Just to round that corner on the ferry and see the coloured buildings and boats tucked into its tiny harbour makes another visit more than worthwhile. There is something that gets me every time we visit, and I just can't stop taking photos from every angle. I know it can't change that much surely, but there always seems to be something I haven't seen before!

A Painting A Week No 99
For Sale - 22nd February 2012
Vernazza, Italy - Collage
Size: 21 x 15cm
Price A$90
(Postage and handling included)
Where are the weeks going? Something a little different this week, as I've been trying out some different collage techniques. I do have two slightly more 'normal' weekly paintings underway, but not quite there yet. I blame my tardiness on the cold wet weather we've been having. As I try to decide what to paint, I notice that I'm being drawn to vibrant summery photos at the moment - coloured umbrellas, turquoise water, bright glistening buildings - sigh....

Vernazza must be one of the most colourful little towns I've been to. Not only are the buildings a wild array of yellows, oranges, pinks and greens, but the waterfront is full of umbrellas of every colour of the rainbow, as well as boats, flowers and, of course, people!

Vernazza, Cinque Terre
Acrylic & Ink Painting
Size: 21 x 15cm
Price A$80
(Plus A$10 postage and handling)
Another little snippet of Cinque Terre from our recent trip through Italy. The 3 of the 5 Cinque Terre villages we visited were really very special, although a little crowded. Although it was only the end of May, we managed to bump into an Italian public holiday which of course didn't help matters!

Another painting from Manarola. I just couldn't stop taking photos of the jumble of buildings squeezed into the small space around the harbour. I feel sure there'll be paintings of Riomaggiore and Vernazza, the other two villages we visited, at some stage.

On our way through to Greece we spent a couple of nights in Moneglia, a lovely little town south of Genoa and finally, I got to visit the Cinque Terre villages of Italy. Five beautiful colourful villages tucked into the mountains along the coast, and spilling down into the brilliant acqua waters. We visited three of them, and the camera worked overtime!
