A Painting A Week No 109 - Kolios Beach, Skiathos

For Sale - 21st August 2012

Kolios Beach, Skiathos
Size: 21 x 15cm
Price A$90
(Postage and handling included)

Kolios Beach is a lovely spot just near where I spend my time on the beautiful Greek island of Skiathos. There's been many a time when I've sat at this table, or one nearby, sipping an ouzo, or perhaps having an evening snack. Sadly, the taverna there didn't seem to be operating this year, but I guess there's always hope for next year.

A Painting A Week No 108 - Poppy Fields, Tuscany

For Sale - 8th August 2012

Poppy Fields, Tuscany
Size: 21 x 15cm
Price A$90
(Postage and handling included)

Yes, I suspect I may be a little obsessed with poppies.  There's nothing like driving around a corner and there in front of you, is a field covered in a whole mass of red. It is sometimes tricky to find a field with a good backdrop though, cos supermarkets and motorways in the background, just don't quite work.  This field was along one of the small roads between Pisa and Siena - I've included a photo below, with Rita, which I think highlights just how crazy I/we must look when taking these photos! All for a good cause though.

A Painting a Week No 107 - Quattro Gondola, Venice

For Sale - 1st August 2012

Quattro Gondola, Venice
Size: 21 x 15cm
Price A$90
(Postage and handling included)

As I'm sure I've said before, one of the things I love to photograph when we're in Venice are the gondolas, particularly when I come upon groups of them 'floating idly', with their beautiful pointy ends splaying out in all directions (not a very nautical description I know!) This could well be the start of a new series of paintings from our visit to Venice in May - they just seemed to be there waiting for me around every corner!

May 2012 - and then.... A Short Stint in Provence

We headed into France next and towards Aix en Provence, yet another place we’d raced past for the last 2 or 3 years. I was hoping to see the Cezanne Gallery and his studio, as it turned out, so was everyone else in France at that time.  The place seemed to be jumping. The large roundabout in the centre was a jumble of tourist buses and jaywalking tourists, many trundling suitcases and the 3 hotels I asked at whilst Peter sat in the car, looked at me in amazement and said a rather firm ‘Complet Madame’.  Before it came too stressful Peter and I came to an immediate agreement that we abandon Aix on this trip, and head to the coast.  A good move as we found a good room for the night and next morning had breakfast in Sanary sur Mer and a good wander around through the huge produce market there.  I've noticed on recent visits to France that there's a trend towards white umbrellas in some of the local markets - not nearly as exciting for photographs and/or paintings - lets hope the coloured ones that are left, remain. This whole market at Sanary sur Mer was a feast of bright colours which is what got me clicking!

I also spent ages taking photos of the beautiful old boats crammed into the harbour, with their reflections .....

..... and the lovely backdrop of the old town of Sanary sur Mer

So happily armed with the boat and the market shots, I left with a head full of prospective paintings. Another good spot to return to, to be added onto the list!

Next we were off along the coast to Nice ….. slowly because we seemed to get caught up in what must be Europe’s largest Harley Davidson get together. I’ve never seen so many motorbikes in one place, all unfortunately on the narrow coastal road near the St Tropez turnoff, which is often a frustrating stretch of road at the best of times. We wanted to visit the Maeght Foundation near St Paul de Vence before arriving in Nice, which we did, but I must admit I was rather disappointed in the artworks there. I suspect they may now have moved a lot of the paintings to separate galleries in and around Nice. There is a good selection of sculptures there though, so worth the visit if that’s what you want to see.

After spending some time cruising around the not so salubrious outer surburbs in search of a large Carrefour Supermarket to restock our French products to take back to Greece, we arrived at Esplanade des Anglaise for our rendezvous with Rita and Donna. They were staying in a beautiful apartment overlooking the beach, with all that entailed – hours of entertainment from the window sill!
Some ladies even in their PJ's!

Its always great to be back in France – seems a little like returning home in some ways and I love having the soft musical French language in the background.  We made sure we had an Indian meal whilst we were there – seems like that’s the closest for us – sad eh!

Skiathos, Greece 2
Size: 21 x 15cm
Price A$90
(Postage and handling included)

I’m currently in northern Greece, and on the way here spent 9 days on the lovely island of Skiathos, hence this week’s painting. This is my 3rd year visiting Skiathos and each time I seem to slip easily into ‘creative mode’. I put this down to Yvonne’s inspiring company, and cool relaxing studio! Once again I've fallen for a view over the water but there’s so much to paint there that I’m always spoilt for choice. I do love the contrast of the sea, white houses and the orange roofs.  Needless to say there are more Skiathos paintings in the pipeline, and some from Skopelos as well, where we spent a couple of days exploring once Peter joined me.

French Poppies 4
Size: 21 x 15cm
Price A$90
(Postage and handling included)

Back in France again for a few days and its poppy time of the year. This trip though we've not really been in the right areas to capture the fields overflowing with them. Travelling through Italy last week was stunning though, with beautiful fields of brilliant red poppies, often interspersed with yellow daisies, but as luck would have it, none quite within camera range. This is a painting I finished just before we left Greece, painted from a photo which I took this time last year in the Languedoc region of France. Hopefully when we head back into Italy soon, the Italian ones will be ready and waiting for me in some more accessible spots.
